The Tamara Kodai

Step inside this heritage resort in the hills of Kodaikanal and you immediately feel as if you have opened the door into a rather elegant past. The hotel started life as the residence of a British judge and then a rest house for local priests. This is a suites-only property and each of the 53 suites is kitted out with a bedroom, living room, and of course, a large balcony to savour a good cup of coffee with absolutely mesmerising view of the hills and valleys of Kodaikanal. Indulge in sumptuous breakfast under magnificent chandeliers, lunch on the lush lawns and dinner under the sky. There’s also a French-style bistro and bar, a temperature-controlled pool and a beautiful spa. You can hike or go cycling on scenic paths. There’s also archery. But nothing beats sinking into a leather sofa with a book.

Dunnottar Bungalow

Phosart Studio

This heritage bungalow located on the banks of the Kodai Lake once belonged to Lord Chamberlain in the pre-independence era. He sold it to the Puliyadi family in 1940s and sailed back to the United Kingdom, with just two suitcases. Even with subsequent renovations led by Shalini Biswajit, an artist and interior design consultant, the bungalow retains a palpable connection to its past, with restored artifacts from the Chamberlain period scattered throughout, each telling a silent story. Repurposed beams find new life as unique furniture pieces, while vintage family photographs create a poignant narrative along the walls. There are five bedrooms, a library, a sprawling kitchen and dining area and a bar where one could just relax on the sofa sipping coffee. The inviting sit-out is a favourite gathering spot, perfect for dining, games, reading, or simply unwinding. From the comfort of the wooden bench, you can enjoy glimpses of the shimmering lake and the lush garden, including the natural spring that nourishes the property. Don’t miss the wood-fired pizza and other home cooked delights.
