It is interesting to note how both Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, two forms of geomancy, have evolved and integrated each other’s elements. With bamboo plants, Vastu principles illustrate this blend, reflecting the overarching goal of creating harmony and balance in a space, despite their roots in different traditions. "Bamboo's inclusion in many modern Vastu-compliant garden lists, even though it’s not originally specified, highlights the adaptability of these principles," says Namrataa Kripallani, a Vastukar from Pune. In this week’s Vastu edit, she suggests lucky placements for bamboo when nurtured as a houseplant, as it is believed to promote healing and growth in a home.

Growing Bamboo In Vastu-compliant Directions

The south-east and east are the two universal directions to place a bamboo plant indoors. "Having said that, it really depends on contemplating what your wishes and desires are," Kripallani says, suggesting two other directions:

  • South-east: This direction represents the free flow of money into your life. It is the best direction to place the bamboo plant to maintain a continuous flow of wealth. Use a green, yellow, or gold pot to enhance its prosperity-attracting properties. Tie a red ribbon around the stalks for added prosperity. "Bamboo’s ability to bend without breaking embodies adaptability and strength," the Vastukar says. Placing it here can motivate the residents, even when the going gets tough financially.
  • East: This direction represents opening doors to the right people who support your goals in life. Kripallani considers this one of the best directions to place the bamboo plant. "The hollow stem of bamboo signifies openness and communication, allowing for the free flow of energy," she says. "A healthy bamboo plant here can act as a conversation starter and promote positive interactions," she adds.
  • North: This direction represents growth and prosperity. Its rapid growth is associated with upward momentum in life and success. It attracts wealth, peace, and happiness. Place a bamboo plant in the north direction of your office or home to energise career growth and success.
  • North-of-northeast: This direction represents good health in Vastu Shastra. Placing the plant in the NNE direction promotes both physical and mental health. Place the bamboo in a glass container with small white pebbles and water to amplify its calming energy.

Bamboo Plant Placements

Here’s a guide on how to place your bamboo plant to activate abundance:

  • Benefits of Bamboo at the Entrance
Place the bamboo plant near the main entrance to invite prosperity and ward off negative energies. Ensure it is positioned on the right-hand side of the entrance as you walk in.
  • Bamboo in the Living Room
A bamboo plant grown in a glass vase filled with water creates a chic, minimalist look. Enhance the plant's energy by incorporating natural stones or crystals, such as Citrine or clear quartz, to amplify its vibrations. For an added touch of abundance, consider placing some coins in the water.
  • Bamboo at the Work Desk
For a stress-free work environment, consider placing a bamboo plant at your desk, particularly close to your computer. This positioning can improve focus and productivity by promoting a calm and balanced atmosphere.

Stalk Symbolism

The number of stalks in a bamboo arrangement is believed to represent specific blessings:

  • Three stalks symbolise happiness, good fortune, and longevity, bringing harmony and joy.
  • Five stalks stand for health, vitality, and balance, promoting physical well-being and equilibrium.
  • Six stalks attract wealth, prosperity, and abundance, enhancing financial opportunities and good fortune.

The choice of the number of stalks is often based on the desired energy or blessing one wishes to invite into their life.

Bamboo Plant Care

To ensure the health and vibrance of your bamboo plants, Vastu recommends providing them with indirect sunlight, avoiding direct sunlight and cold drafts that can cause wilting. Ensure the roots are submerged in clean, filtered water, changing it weekly to prevent stagnation and algae growth. Trim any yellow or brown leaves regularly to maintain its fresh look. If the bamboo is planted in soil, ensure the soil is well-draining and kept moist but not soggy.
