An Abundant Garden Terrace At This Barsati Noida Home

barsati boasts the modern-day comforts rivalling any other luxury home. Initially built to house domestic staff, today these terrace flats are rented out to tenants or even allow members of a large joint family to live within the same home but with their own privacy.

When interior designer Aditi Sharma’s friends embarked on expanding their family, they, too, were looking for a place to call their own in their current family home in Noida. “They wanted a fully functional space with everything thought through, from a small nursery for a baby and a home office to a bar, fully equipped kitchen and pantry."

Entering the apartment through the terrace, which is decorated with an abundance of plants and comfortable seating, we walk into the living room which trickles seamlessly into the small open kitchen, partially separated by a concealed bar unit. - Ela Das

It was the terraces that did it for Ankita Dabrai and Neha Sawhney Chadha when they were handed over a 2,200 square feet Pune apartment to be transformed into an immersive living environment. “Most Pune apartments have one terrace, but this one had two!” exults the duo. So right at the outset their creative energies were channelised into deepening the connection between the enclosed areas and these outdoors spaces.

It was this attention to detail that drew the family of four—a middle-aged couple and their two preteen children—to O’nest Interiors. “The clients had seen our previous work and loved the fact that that house looked like a home and not a hotel.” In addition to asking for more accessible and usable terraces, the brief from their well-travelled clients called for an “elite palette balancing minimalist and modernism.” - Rupali Sebastian

A Garden of Eden In This Duplex Kozhikode Apartment

On the twelfth and thirteenth floors of a tower in Kozhikode, is a duplex apartment that enlivens the Garden of Eden. Foliage climbs up the walls and spills off the balconies, while a dazzling scarlet staircase takes centre stage, holding a mirror to the forbidden fruit. Only, unlike the biblical paradise, there are more than two protagonists to this story. “And more than one source of inspiration too,” smiles Priya Rose, one half of Ernakulam-based multidisciplinary collective, Workers of Art.

“We drew from various other references, including Shakespearean literature and Francis Bacon's quote about gardens being the purest of human pleasures.” For Rose and the firm’s other half, Rahul Mathew, the idea of aerial gardens seemed like a fitting reflection of the new homeowners, a newlywed couple and their long-time friends. “The aesthetic was romantic yet refreshing—the ideal place for Varghese and Reshma to begin their next chapter together,” explains Mathew. - Vaishnavi Nayel Talawadekar

A Private Terrace Rooftop Bar In Hyderabad

A private terrace in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills was transformed into a sundowner-ready rooftop bar, under the incisive direction of NaaV Studio. The terrace was once a bare, under-utilised space, characterised by a simple glass railing and not much else. The home owners in Hyderabad approached architect Varsha Reddy and landscape designer Rohit Mirdoddi with the aim of turning it into a space that they could use to entertain guests. “The client wanted to be able to entertain small groups of people, as well as host large gatherings,” expresses Reddy. “It had to be a multi-purpose space, with intimate sections for seating, and larger open areas.”

Our tour begins in a small transitional space on the ground floor, which is a play of earth tones and soft greys. Pops of colour on the carpet and a weave detail on the teak wood sliding door soothe the visual palette. “It also has a slight hint of red, which reflects the antique kumkum boxes on the display shelves,” Reddy points out. You walk through the room, up a flight of stairs, and you’re met with the entire 3,600 square feet expanse of the terrace. The sandstone pathway, inlaid with rust-coloured pebbles tamped down with resin, pulls the gaze forward, past a landscaped section of planters and decorative antiques on the right, and towards a pergola-dressed bar at the far end. On the left is an asymmetrical dining table that can seat a party of eight, and under the pergola is a bar unit, a kitchenette, and a series of amphitheater-style steps with cushioned seating. A swathe of open space in the centre can accommodate large gatherings. - Avantika Shankar
