Rising from the coast of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea, shimmering steel planes extend beyond the skinny towers of Epicon, a new futuristic skyscraper in Neom, the Arab Kingdom's headlining grabbing $500 billion mega-project. Part of Vision 2030, KSA's masterplan to attract global tourism, Epicon will be a luxury coastal hotspot that, thanks to its unique footprint, will leave 95% of its surrounding terrain untouched. It is also the latest in a long line of architecture projects in the Middle East that seem straight out of sci-fi movies.

Billed by the developer as an ‘opportunity to escape the stresses of the everyday’, Epicon appears like a glistening mirage in the desert, its towers rising from a podium concealed by the landscape. A series of impossibly sleek steel planes – that seem to defy laws of engineering (and gravity) – radiate from the futuristic skyscraper, amplifying its surreal appeal.

Epicon is the latest project unveiled at Neom, the ultra-futuristic lifestyle destination in Gulf of Aqaba, in northwest Saudi Arabia. Designed to boost the Arab Kingdom’s profile as a global tourism destination, Neom is also home to the mirror-like Line, and a slew of hotels and entertainment venues designed by some of the biggest names in architecture.

If you think this futuristic skyscraper was imagined by AI, you are not alone, but Epicon is the brainchild of the international architecture firm 10Design. The project has been imagined as a duo of jagged towers – one 225 metres tall and one reaching 275 metres – both rendered in a mirror-like reflective external cladding, very much like the Line in Neom.

What Will Epicon Be Surrounded By?

Impressive as it is, this shining beacon of futuristic architecture is just one of Neom’s 10 planned regions. So far six regions have been announced including Leyja (which will feature high-end boutique hotels by the likes of Chris van Duijn, Mario Cucinella and Dubai-based Shaun Killa, who has previously designed the Museum of The Future). Plus, there is Oxagon, an octagonal port city and an island resort called Sindalah.
