If I had to describe White Chalk, an 865-square-foot uncluttered Mumbai home located in Malad, designed by RN DEESIGN, in one word, I would use ‘tranquil’. Enveloped in white and a largely neutral palette of beige, cream, and a smattering of black, filled with clean-lined sleek furniture and sumptuous soft furnishings, this apartment invites you to just sink in.

And a slice of quiet, in the bustle of erstwhile Bombay is no mean feat.

At the entrance, the white laminate safety door is both a study in contrasts and a telling hint of what is to come.

Conceptualised for Chryselle and Calvin Carcassco who are both in their early thirties, with the second bedroom/guest room reserved for sets of parents, the designers operated from a simple brief of ‘minimal aesthetics without complex designs’. Principal designer and co-founder of the design studio, Puja Gupta walks us through the space.

Puja, along with husband and co-founder, Rohit were entrusted with a bare flat devoid of even tiles, and bathroom fixtures. They started from scratch, creating a functional and practical shell — moving on to design minimalist, aesthetic interiors, focused around the colour white. A nod to the couple’s preference for minimalism and subtle Scandinavian influences.

The front door opens out into the living room, home to a plush beige sofa — a neutral focal point of the room. Clean-lined glass centre and side tables from Milano Homes are juxtaposed against a warm handwoven jute carpet.

Walk This Way

A black grill paired with a pristine safety door ushers you in to a cosy living room where the neutral palette takes centre stage. Pops of colour come from plants, decorative accents, and the focal point of the room — an arched niche wall. These add a contrast that ensures the all-white palette doesn’t make the space appear washed out.

An all-white semi modular kitchen with beige cabinets and white countertops is next door to the living room, a fluted glass sliding door separating it from the dining area and bar opposite. Here, a custom, charcoal-hued marble top dining table sits in synchronicity with white chairs and a custom all-black bar unit.

Gypsum and POP were used to create an arched niche in the living room, housing colourful accents to break the monotony of white.

Less is more here, in both the silhouette and shades of furniture — allowing spaciousness to permeate. Making the living and dining spaces ideal for social gatherings, which the couple are fond of hosting.

Past the common spaces lie the inner sanctuaries: the guest bedroom facing a common toilet, and finally the master, with a bathroom en suite. With the use of full-length mirrors on either side of the bed, that add depth, the guest bedroom appears larger. The master bedroom, replete in earthy hues of brown, beige and green is designed around comfort — lush furnishings, fluted white walls and nature-themed elements like a starfish sculpture create a calming oasis.

The guest bedroom is kept simple, with the textured wall created using POP adding personality. Earthy neutrals make the room appear warm.

In A Material World

While the reliance on white and neutrals, and sparing use of furniture has created an uncluttered space, textures and materials infuse personality.

The semi-modular kitchen from Taurus Kitchen, with a pristine porcelain tile countertop and flooring, is sleek and uncluttered. A wooden backsplash adds a touch of warmth. The sliding door is fluted glass.

Like the little quirks that distinguish people from each other, the small details in the Mumbai home give away more facets of the people who live there. The use of clean-lined modern furniture, fluted laminate, fluted glass, marble finish-flooring, gold knobs for a touch of glam, and panelled walls give away a predilection towards modernity, detail and for the finer things in life. Quiet, warm and luxurious in its own soft way, for the Carcassco’s white (chalk), is all right.
