A new collection by Sage Living puts one of India's most remarkable epics at the fore. By focusing on key narratives from the Mahabharata, such as the transformative game of Chaupad and the timeless wisdom shared by Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, the founder and designer Keerthi Tummala of Sage Living, along with designer Ram Kabadi, aimed to create not just furniture, but poignant storytelling artefacts that inspire reflection and conversation.
One of the most striking pieces in the collection features an evocative representation of the moment between Arjuna and Krishna, symbolising the profound moral dilemmas depicted in the Bhagavad Gita. On one side, the artwork presents the concept of Dharma, where duty is held sacred above all else, embodying the essence of righteousness and ethical obligation. The reverse side intriguingly contrasts this depiction with the game of Chaupar, a critical turning point that set the course for the epic battle of Kurukshetra. The use of geometric motifs—circles and triangles not only enhances the aesthetic but also represents the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of choices and fate, creating a multifaceted dialogue that encourages viewers to ponder their own life decisions.
Materiality plays a significant role in this collection, with the choice of elements resonating deeply with the historical context of the stories being retold. The prominence of bronze reflects the artistry of the Bronze Age, while other materials such as wood, pearl, and essences bring a tactile richness to each piece. Incorporating obsidian rock crystal sourced from the Dwarka coastline further connects the collection to its geographical and cultural roots, grounding the designs in the very landscape that inspired them. “A range of traditional techniques have been employed, including Pietra dura and bronze casting. We've also utilised exquisite materials such as mother of pearl, silver pyrite, gold gilding on rock crystal, and micro mosaics,” Ram further adds. The alchemy of these materials elevates each item into a work of art, merging function with aesthetic beauty.
“The collection is not just about furniture; it serves as a bridge between generations, rekindling an appreciation for the cultural narratives that shaped Indian identity,” Keerthi mentions. “Sage Living believes that storytelling is an integral part of design, and this line seeks to re-engage younger audiences who may feel distanced from these epic tales.” By presenting these narratives in contemporary forms, each piece becomes a gateway to explore the complexities of fate, duty, and moral choices, encouraging dialogue among family members and friends.
Through meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design, "An Ode to Epic" transforms traditional mythological storytelling into a modern expression that resonates with today’s sensibilities. As Sage Living brings these ancient tales into contemporary living spaces, they rekindle the magic of storytelling, ensuring that the lessons of the Mahabharata continue to inspire and provoke thought for generations to come.
